FAMILY HISTORY UPDATE

February 2, 2010

We need to properly identify the father of Joseph Jeffs who is the adoptive father of George Henry Jeffs who is the father of Florence Mary Jeffs.
PROBLEM: Is Joseph’s father the Thomas Jeffs christened on 8 May 1785 at Eaton Bray, Hertford, England or the Thomas Jeffs christened on 21 Jan 1798 at Hemel-Hempstead. Or are they the same person?
WHAT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED:
1. There was a Thomas Jeffs christened on 21 Jan 1798 at Hemel-Hempstead. British microfilm # 091762, Parish registers for Hemel-Hempstead, Heartford, England lists the following, “Christened 21 Jan 1798, Thomas son of Thomas and Hannah Jeffs, born 18 Sep 1797”
2. He had a brother named Samanuel (or Samuel). Film #091762 also lists the following, “Christened 18 Apr 1802, Samanuel son of Thomas and Hannah Jeffs, born 14 Mar 1802”
3. The 1798 Thomas Jeffs’ father is “Thomas Jeffs” and his mother is “Hannah”
4. The 1851 England Census, Registration district of Hemel Hempstead, Lists a Joseph Jeffs age 25 son of Hannah age 62. (Household Members listed were Hannah Jeffs age 62, Joseph Jeffs age 25 and Elizabeth Jeffs age 21.) So Joseph would have been born about 1825 and his mother, Hannah, about 1789. No father listed.
WHAT NEXT?
1. Search Parish records for a Thomas Jeffs christened on or about 8 May 1785
2. Search Parish records to verify the Marriage date and place for Thomas Jeffs and Hannah [Bates].
3. Search Parish christening records for possible children of Thomas and Hannah.
4. Search Parish records to verify Hannah Bates christening date of 31 Jan 1798 in either Ivanhoe, Buckingham, England or Hemel-Hempstead, Hertford, England.

I plan to order some microfilm into the Twin Falls Family History Library this week and hope to make a trip to the Salt Lake Family History Library in March. If anyone would like to help on this or other research projects please let me know.
